From the year 1928 onwards, a total of 520 class 64 locomotives were put into service. The locomotives, which could go up to a speed of 90 km/h, were built based on the construction principle of standard steam locomotives, which facilitated the supply of spare parts. These locomotives were mainly operated on branch lines and for the transport of passenger trains or light goods trains.
At the time computer numbers were introduced on 1st January 1968, there were still 52 locomotives in German Federal Railways fleet. In contrast to the DR locomotives, which were mainly used in the northern lowlands, the 64s used on the Federal Railways were exclusively operated south of the Main line after 30th April 1966, when the 64 446 was transferred from the Hamburg-Rothenburgsort depot to the Plattling depot.
